Depression - Overcoming the Hurdle
66
People suffering from depression typically find themselves unable to go about their daily tasks. However, the full effects of depression can actually vary from one individual to another. Some might find themselves unable to sleep, while others simply can't seem to get enough sleep. Some starve themselves, while others gorge themselves with food. Regardless of the actual effects though, trying to overcome depression is one of the most difficult tasks most people would ever have to face. Some, unfortunately, never fully understand how to fight depression, and succumb to it.
If you are suffering from depression, the first step you want to take to overcome it is to take note of your nutrition. Depression is commonly understood as being caused by changes in brain chemicals among other factors, and what you eat directly affects your body as well as mind. Take your meals at regular intervals, with healthy servings of fruits and vegetables. Do not go on any diet which requires you to starve yourself for a period of time; instead, take smaller helpings of food but at more frequent intervals. Seek medical help; prescribed medication does help in lifting your mood initially. You can also try natural remedies for depression, such as Vitamin C which is present in great quantities in oranges.
With the right food in your stomach and the right nutrients in your brain, you can then try to figure out what causes your depression. Different people will have different triggers. You can try to record down your mood swings in a diary. If you find a pattern of events or activities which seem to cause negative mood swings, try to cut them out of your life altogether, or if not possible, try to avoid them. If even that is not possible, try talking to someone. You can also consider writing (songs, blogs or poems) or even drawing to let go of your feelings. Venting out your feelings can be a truly cathartic experience.
Those suffering from depression have a very negative image of themselves and the world. They feel they are not worthy of anyone's love. Overcoming such feelings requires a change in mindset, which is of course, far easier said than done. Do not shy away from taking credit for any positive outcomes resulting from your own actions, but at the same time, do not dwell on negative outcomes or repeatedly blame yourself. Learn from your past, and remember that human beings are not perfect.
If you are depressed, then reading articles such as this is a great sign. It shows you are actually willing to at least learn more about your condition, and you are actually motivated enough to get rid of it. You have already taken one of your first steps towards recovery. Keep in mind your nutritional diet, as well as your mindset and emotional triggers, and overcoming depression will be well within your reach.
